Eagles vs Fighters CS Game 2 Postgame: Paradise Lost

SAPPORO DOME, SAPPORO - Two outs. They can come in a blink of an eye, with a second baseman turning a 6-4-3 double play. 2 outs. They can take forever, as pitch after pitch gets batted around the ball park like a pinball. 2 アウト。 Sometimes, they never come at all.
Eagles vs Buffaloes Postgame: Seguignol saves the day

KYOCERA DOME, OSAKA - Fernando Seguignol continued his improved play of late, lifting the Rakuten Eagles to a 6-3 victory over the cellar dwelling Orix Buffaloes Monday night. With the win the Eagles lowered their new Magic Number (for home field advantage during the 1st stage of the Climax Series) to three, as 3rd place Softbank had the night off.
Rakuten opened the scoring in the second inning. Orix starter Shogo Yamamoto (9-7) was almost out of the inning when the Eagles struck. Consecutive 2-out singles by Jin Nakatani and Yosuke Takasu put Rakuten up 2-0. Nakatani helped extend the lead in the fourth inning when his sacrifice fly to right field allowed Fernando Seguignol to rumble home from 3rd base.
Eagles starter Masahiro Tanaka (15-6) was cruising along through six innings, even striking out the side in the 4th, but ran into trouble in the 7th. Like Yamamoto in the 2nd inning, Tanaka's troubles began with two outs. CF Tomotaka Sakaguchi started the rally with a triple. RF Hiroyuki Oze then drew a walk, putting runners on the corners. 1B Hirotoshi Kitagawa then drove a 1-0 pitch into the corner in left field, scoring the speedy Sakaguchi with the double. With Orix runners in scoring position, veteran DH Tuffy Rhodes hit a first pitch 94 mph fastball into right field and the game was suddenly tied at three.
The comeback was short lived however, as in the top of the 8th inning Seguignol connected on a 1-2 changeup, depositing it into the right field seats. He knew it was gone as soon as it left the bat, shouting out toward the Eagles dugout as he started rounding the bases. Shinichiro Koyama replaced Tanaka in the 9th, giving up two hits before finishing off the Buffaloes and recording his fifth save of the year.
Pitching
Ma-kun dominated the first four innings to start things off, but ran out of steam over the latter half of his 8 inning performance.
- Innings 1-4: 3 hits (all singles), 4 strikeouts, 1 walk, 0 runs.
- Innings 5-8: 9 hits (2 doubles, 1 triple), 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, 3 runs.
Is this a cause for concern? Perhaps. Tanaka got lucky in the 6th inning, escaping unscathed after having runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. With Rhodes on 3rd, Naoyuki Omura grounded into a double play, and the slow footed DH was unable to score. The next batter grounded out to end the inning. As the old adage goes, "You gotta be good to be lucky, and you gotta be lucky to be good."
Hitting
The bottom of the order supplied most of the offense tonight, with the 7 thru 9 starters combining to go 5 for 10 with 5 RBI and 3 runs scored. Seguignol was batting just .192 at the beginning of August. Since then he's managed to raise his average by 60 points! He's also on a 10 game hitting streak. During the Hero of the Game interview he was asked about the streak, to which he replied, "Oh no, now you've jinxed me!"
There was a hit of another kind that may be of concern to the Eagles. In his at bat in the top of the 9th, Teppei was struck in the back of his left leg by a Vogelsong wild pitch. He was carried off the field and did not return. Hopefully the ball hit muscle and not bone. Expect Rakuten to release info about his status tomorrow.
Next Game
The Eagles still have two more games to play before their next day off. Hisashi Iwakuma will get the start tomorrow night at Chiba Marine Stadium for Bobby Valentine's final home game as the Lotte manager. It should be a special game. First pitch is at 6:15pm local time, 2:15am PST.
Eagles vs Hawks Postgame: Akiyama’s gamble pays off

SENDAI, MIYAGI - A gutsy call by the Hawks manager in the bottom of the 9th, coupled with an RBI triple by second baseman Morimoto spoiled the Eagles' comeback attempt, as the Softbank Hawks drew first blood in this crucial 4-game series.
Down 5-1 at one point, Rakuten clawed back with two runs in the 6th and 7th innings to tie the game and had a chance to complete the comeback in the bottom of the ninth. 2B Yosuke Takasu led things off with a walk, and was replaced by pinch runner Ryo Hijirisawa, who stole second base. Teppei was up next, breaking his bat on an infield grounder and was out at a close play at first base. Teppei succeeded in advancing Hijirisawa to third though with only one out.
Here's where Akiyama's gamble began. He ordered the right handed pitcher Takahiro Mahara to intentionally walk DH Takeshi Yamasaki, putting men on the corners. Left handed hitting Daisuke Kusano came up to bat next, and Mahara intentionally walked him as well, loading the bases with only one out! Lumbering up to the plate next was switch hitting Fernando Seguignol, who has been enjoying an offensive revival of sorts in September. After fouling off four pitches into the 3rd base seats, he chopped a 2-2 offering to the right side of the infield. Hijirisawa was forced out at home, and Hawks catcher Hidenori Tanoue completed the rare 4-2-3 double play by firing the ball to first, long before Seguignol arrived at the bag. The strategy worked, giving Softbank the chance to win the game in the 10th inning, much to the disappointment of the Rakuten crowd, who were certain that a thrilling comeback was in the cards.
Pitching
Rakuten starter Hisashi Iwakuma had one of his worst performances of the year (6 IP, 9 H, 4 BB, 5 ER, 6 K). It's strange, many "ace" pitchers are struggling right now. We saw Seibu's Kishi and Wakui get lit up, Ma-kun got rocked in his last start, and now Iwakuma. Perhaps when the Fighters' Yu Darvish returns from the DL, all will be right again in the Pacific League pitching universe. Shinichiro Koyama took the loss for the Eagles.
Hitting
Yamasaki finally hit one out of the park last night, and with 3 RBI eclipsed the century mark on the season. The only 2 batters to record multiple hits on the night were Naoto Watanabe and Todd Linden. Although Seguignol has been on a tear of late, I thought that Nomura should have tried for a squeeze play to win the game in the 9th. They had speed at 3rd, and the quick Makoto Kosaka on the bench. Nomura used squeeze plays with great success earlier in the year but has seemed to have abandoned them during the second half.
Next Game
The Eagles' are going to have to wash the nasty taste of this game out of their mouths quick, as they're back at it again tonight. Seibu also lost last night, so Rakuten's grip on 3rd place wasn't weakened, but the focus for Nomura's Eagles now should be to get the split in this series. A 3 games to 1 loss or god forbid a 4 game sweep would give the Hawks extra confidence and momentum leading into a probable postseason matchup between these two clubs.
Eagles vs Lions Postgame: Chicks dig the long ball

TOKOROZAWA, SAITAMA - Looks like it was "Corked Bat Day" at the Seibu Dome this afternoon, as the Eagles and Lions combined to hit 7 balls out of the park. Seguignol (13th HR) finally put one out, Linden (10th, 11th HR) smacked two, and Nakatani continues his great play with his 3rd of the year. The heart of the Lions' order provided the deep balls for the home team: G.G. Sato (24th), Takeya "Okawari" Nakamura (44th), and Yoshihito Ishii (6th).
Early on things looked bleak for Rakuten as they fell behind 4-0 through four innings. Then Lions' starter Kishi decided to start pitching moonballs, cueing the comeback. Seguignol, Linden, and Nakatani stunned the crowd with back-to-back-to-back homeruns, cutting the lead to a single run. After Masato Nakamura flied out, Naoto Watanabe picked up a hit, and Teppei got on base on an error, which also advanced Naoto to 3rd. That spelled the end of the night for Ishii, who was replaced by Koji Onuma. The Eagles kept on hitting though. Daisuke Kusano singled, scoring Naoto, then Yosuke Takasu lined a hit into right field, scoring Teppei. By the time Seguignol struck out to end the inning the damage had already been done, and the Eagles led the game for the first time.
In the bottom of the 5th Aoyama continued to struggle, giving up consecutive singles to put men at 1st and 2nd with no outs. The recently VERY shaky Tsuyoshi Kawagishi replaced Aoyama and managed to pitch his way out of a bases loaded jam to end the threat.
Linden led off the 6th with his second dinger of the night, and provided the game winning RBI in the 7th.
Kawagishi reverted to recent form in the bottom of the 7th, serving up back-to-back homers to Nakamura and Ishii. Kazuo Fukumori replaced the shell-shocked Kawagishi and pitched without incident through to the ninth. After Rakuten tacked on 3 insurance runs in the top of the 9th, Aoyama came in an retired the side to complete the comeback.
Pitching - At times it looked like a Homerun Derby out there, with both starters getting an early trip to the showers. Just after the All-Star break it had looked as though Rakuten had finally found its setup man in Kawagishi. I'm not sure if it was nerves, or simply that batters learned the book on him because he's quickly gone from a solid reliever to erratic and unreliable. He's not getting good movement on his pitches and doesn't have the velocity to get away with it. At the other end is Koyama, who hasn't given up a run in his last 6 appearances.
Hitting - Left fielder Todd Linden had his best offensive game to date, going 4 for 5 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. It was nice to see someone other than DH Yamasaki hit one out of the park as well. Catcher Jin Nakatani continued his great week as well. Over the past month Nomura has been seen constantly lecturing Nakatani and Shima in the dugout during games. Looks like whatever wisdom he's imparting on the platoon is doing the job.
Next Game - The rubber match starts at 1pm tomorrow. It's almost a must-win game for Seibu, and Rakuten will be looking to take hold of 2nd place in the Pacific League, so let's hope the fireworks continue!

16th Win 11-4
