With the season hanging in the balance, the Eagles will look to rookie left-hander Hiromichi Fujiwara to keep their slim hopes alive in an afternoon game in Sapporo today.  Game 5 was going to be the wildcard game in the series for Rakuten anyways; after their top three pitchers the quality of their starters is questionable at best.  Facing elimination though means the stakes will be even higher, so we'll truly get to see just what this 24-year-old is made of.

The Eagles try to stave off elimination tonight as they battle the Fighters at the Sapporo Dome.  The Rakuten offense finally sputtered last night, despite having multiple opportunities late in the game to score runs, highlowlighted by a bases loaded, no out situation in the 8th inning where they failed to produce a single run.  The two defeats in Hokkaido have been of the soul-crushing variety; the series could just have easily been 2-1 in favour of the Eagles.  Now they'll just try to save some face by not getting swept by the Pacific League winning Nippon Ham Fighters.

Wait, game 3?  What happened to game 2???  I figured I'd get these numbered properly (at least in my opinion); since the Eagles are losing the series two games to zero, it only makes sense to me that tonight's contest should be named game 3.  Don't like it?  Well, I don't like how grown men spit on the floor inside an office building here in Japan but there ain't much I can do about it.

Eagles vs Hawks CS Game 1 Postgame: Goin’ Deep

KLEENEX STADIUM, SENDAI - It's already win-or-go-home for the Softbank Hawks after getting smoked 11-4 last night at Kleenex Stadium in front of a sellout crowd.  Hawks ace pitcher (and PL strikeout king) Toshiya Sugiuchi got knocked around like Jose Canseco in an MMA fight, surrendering a lead-off HR to Yosuke Takasu to start off the game.  Four batters later, Fernando Seguignol cranked a 2-run shot to right field and the score was 3-0.  The home team chased Sugiuchi in the 3rd inning as they tacked on four more runs, highlighted by another 2-run homer, this time by Toshiya Nakashima, who managed to keep the ball just fair, knocking it off of the left field foul pole.

Live from Game 1: Photos and Videos

Too exhausted to write a postgame report, but I'll include some specifics in my Game 2 Preview tomorrow morning.  For now, feast your eyes and ears on the photos and videos I took from the game tonight.  It was an amazing experience, and well worth the 12 hours of line waiting I had to do this week to get tickets and good seats.

Eagles vs Hawks Postgame: Bridges burnt

KLEENEX STADIUM, SENDAI - I don't even know where to start after tonight's events.  I spent 8 freaking hours at the stadium today, made a sign supporting manager Katsuya Nomura, and basically he took a giant crap on mine and everyone else's head.  Let's get to the actual game first before I dive head first into my rant.

Pitching

Starting pitcher Darrell Rasner's line: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 HR, 1 K, 1 BB, 4 ER.  Have fun in double A or the Dominican Republic or wherever you end up next year, because you ain't hackin' it in NPB.

Softbank's Tsuyoshi Wada pitched brilliantly, scattering three hits over five innings while striking out seven.  Then Hawks manager Akiyama inexplicably used six relievers over the next four innings.  Perhaps he had a quota to fill or something.  He probably could've gone out there himself and thrown a couple shutout innings the way the Eagles were swinging the bat.

Hitting

There was some excellent hitting tonight, unfortunately none of it came from the Eagles.  When your 3-4-5 hitters combine to go hitless in nine at-bats, chances are you're going to lose the game.  Low and behold, loss number 66 to finish off the regular season.  The reanimated corpse of Takeshi Yamasaki went 0 for 4 and struck out looking twice.

The Rant

Let's get to the juicy stuff then.  Basically, this whole Nomura re-signing debacle can be blamed on both parties (management and Nomura) equally.  Management shouldn't have strung Nomura along for so long, and Nomura shouldn't have opened his big rice-hole to the press every chance he got.  For a while it was working in Nomura's favour though, a slow but steady groundswell of support was definitely building on his side.  I want to quote a translated interview with Nomura, courtesy of Gen over at Yakyu Baka.

Nothing I can say here.  I'm sure I'll have a chance to talk to the club.  I think the club when through some tough times when the previous manager Tao left.  They took the upper hand when they said they wouldn't say anything more than necessary.  I wonder if I can regain the upper hand at some point.

I'm not sure if this is a cultural difference between The West and Japan, but where I come from having the upper hand means that you've gained some sort of advantage.  Being childish, petulant, vindictive, and ego-maniacal is no way to get the upper hand.  You might get an uppercut or a backhand, but nothing positive will come out of either of those scenarios.  What am I talking about exactly?

Earlier today, according to Nikkan Sports (Google translation here), and commenter infimum (thanks!) starting left fielder Todd Linden has been removed from the active roster, effectively suspended for the duration of the 1st stage of the Climax Series.  The suspension stems from an incident between Nomura and Linden in the 7-1 loss to the Fighters on Saturday night.  Linden came on as a pinch hitter in the top of the 9th inning, grounding out to first base.  According to the report, after the game he said, "Thank You" to Nomura.  The 74-year old manager felt that Linden's comment was overly sarcastic and deactivated him from the active roster, citing "criticizing of managerial decisions".  Linden has been one of the most productive (not to mention popular) players over the past two months and has been a major reason why the Eagles are in the position they are.

Nomura is definitely "old school", and it is charming to a point, but this just reeks of a giant "eff you" move to management for not re-signing him to another contract.

Speaking of "eff you" moves, Nomura pulled another one at the game tonight.  At the end of the game there was a brief presentation of gifts to Nomura and some players in front of their dugout, after which the team promptly exited the field to the locker room.  The team didn't even come over to left field to acknowledge their biggest and loudest cheering section!!!  Mind you, most of the Ouendan are season's ticket holders as well, and they were NOT happy that Nomura didn't make an appearance.  There was lots of angry yelling and jeering from Rakuten's most faithful supporters, who were visibly shocked that he didn't even give them a wave.  I left the Ouendan before things got really ugly.

We'll see how all this drama plays out over the next few days leading up to the playoffs.  I just don't see how this is a rational baseball decision and not some juvenile stunt by Nomura to exercise his authority while he still has it.  How does this help the team?  Yamasaki couldn't hit a beach ball at this point, Teppei has gone cold, and he replaced Takasu and Watanabe with creampuffs Uchimura and Kosaka in the 3rd inning!

There's a fine line between genius and madness.  Perhaps Typhoon Melor washed the line away.

Eagles vs Hawks Game 24 Preview

hawksnight

Tonight we get a preview of next week's Pacific League playoffs as the Softbank Hawks come to Sendai to take on the Eagles in a game that was originally scheduled for October 2nd but was rained out.  The Hawks haven't played since the 6th so they should be well rested, perhaps even a little rusty.  They're in the midst of a 4-game losing streak and will definitely want something positive to build on as they'll be back here on the 16th to begin Stage 1 of the Climax Series.

The Eagles on the other hand have only had six days off since the beginning of September!  Last night in Sapporo, manager Katsuya Nomura gave many of his starters a well deserved rest, having clinched second place on Friday night at home.  The Fighters ran roughshod over the Eagles in a meaningless game for both teams, winning 7-1.

Tonight's game should be an interesting one, for a couple of reasons besides the obvious playoff matchup.  As I mentioned before, the Hawks haven't played in a while, and with the news that DH Nobuhiko Matsunaka will miss the rest of the season to have knee surgery Softbank will need to tinker with their lineup.  Not the best time of the year to be doing that no doubt.  The 36-year old Matsunaka was having a solid season, batting .279 with 23 homeruns, 80 RBI, and 62 runs scored, and will be dearly missed in their lineup.  We'll also see if the intensity will be there, or if both teams will simply mail it in and try not to get injured.  Or will there be some sort of incident tonight, further fueling the fire for the playoffs this Friday?

Rakuten leads the season series 13 to 10, and will be looking for their third straight win over Softbank.

Pitching Matchup

The postponed October 2nd matchup was a pitcher's dream, with Masahiro Tanaka facing off against Toshiya Sugiuchi.  Tonight's matchup... perhaps it's more of a hitter's dream.  Darrell Rasner (4-6, 6.01) will see if he can stay in the game longer than Tsuyoshi Wada (3-5, 4.31).  A consistently inconsistent pitcher, Rasner hasn't pitched horribly since returning to the club last month, but many of his faults have been covered up by an unprecedented offensive period for Rakuten.  If he can't put anything positive together tonight, look for him to spend the postseason in the bullpen.  The lone bright spot in all of this is that he is 1-1 with a 1.26 ERA against Softbank this year.

It's not all doom and gloom though, as Wada has been just as bad.  He hasn't won a game since May 22nd during interleague play.  The former 14-game winner was demoted in June, and hasn't exactly shown management that he was worthy of a September recall with an 0-2 record in three starts.  The no-decision came against the Eagles on September 29th, where he went a solid six innings and gave up only 2 earned runs.

Who's Hot

2B Yosuke Takasu has been swinging a hot bat of late.  Had he gotten enough at-bats, his .302 average would have easily placed him in the Pacific League top 10, joining teammates Daisuke Kusano (.307) and Teppei Tsuchiya (.328).  The 33-year old Takasu is 7 for 15 in his last five games with three runs batted in.

Who's Cold

Can somebody please tell Nomura that the zombie corpse of DH Takeshi Yamasaki is indeed dead?  Since showing a glimmer of life in the Seibu series on the 3rd and 4th, the 23-year veteran's slump has gotten even worse.  With only a single hit in his last 19 at-bats and no RBI, the 41-year old has created a void in the lineup as big as he is.

Despite winning his first ever batting title, CF Teppei hasn't been quite the same since missing two games with a leg injury.  He's gone hitless since returning to the lineup.  Since Teppei bats 3rd and Yamasaki bats cleanup, you can see how this is a cause for concern.

First pitch at 6pm local time, 2am PST.  I'll be at the game, standing in the Ouendan for the first time!  If I find a few spare moments I'll do a bit of tweeting from the game.

Eagles vs Buffaloes Postgame: Home-field cookin’

cookin

KLEENEX STADIUM, SENDAI - The Eagles wrapped up a dominating season series with the Orix Buffaloes, in the process clinching home field advantage in the 1st stage of the Climax Series with a come from behind 4-3 victory in front of almost 20,000 screaming fans on a chilly Friday night.

Rookie Hiromichi Fujiwara (5-4) was a little shaky early on, giving up a 2-run blast by RF Shinji Shimoyama and a fielder's choice RBI by SS Koji Yamasaki in the top of the second inning.

Rakuten struck back quickly however with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd innings, with the bottom half of the lineup doing most of the damage once again.  Fernando Seguignol started things off with a great 9-pitch at-bat, eventually drawing a walk.  Todd Linden singled to left, and Jin Nakatani grounded one through the left side of the infield, loading up the bases with two outs.  Leadoff hitter Yosuke Takasu cracked a 137km (85mph) fastball grounder into center field, scoring Seguignol and Linden to cut the lead to one.

The Eagles came roaring back the very next inning, again with some clutch 2-out hitting.  Orix starter Yasunari Takagi (1-2) started to lose control of the strike zone, walking Daisuke Kusano on four pitches and Seguignol on five, setting the stage for Linden who belted a 2-2 fastball into the left field corner for a 2-RBI double.  Linden actually ended up on 3rd base on the play but was unable to score.  The damage was already done however.

Fujiwara settled down after that, scattering just 4 more hits (all singles) over the next 6 innings. He was also helped out by some great deep outfield catches by Linden and RF Toshiya Nakashima.  Kazuo Fukumori came on to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his team-leading tenth save of the year.

While the victory will relieve a little pressure on the Eagles, their final two games still have postseason ramifications, as they face 1st place Nippon Ham in Sapporo tonight, and finish off the regular season at home against their 1st stage opponent, the Softbank Hawks.  They'll definitely want to finish strong to keep their momentum as they enter their first ever postseason!

Pitching

24-year old rookie Fujiwara continues to see his stock rise and is undefeated in his last seven starts (3-0).  The lefty showed a lot of poise after surrendering a three run lead early on, basically shutting down the Buffaloes offense after the second inning.  Has Rakuten finally found their left-handed starter?  All signs are pointing to yes at this point.

Hitting

Takasu and Linden provided all the offense Rakuten needed on this night.  Takasu (3 for 3, 2 RBI, 1 BB) has now brought his batting average up over the .300 mark, and Linden (2 for 3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R) is rapidly approaching the .300 level himself.  Seguignol also played an important role in the scoring, going 1 for 2 with two walks and two runs scored.

Next Game

The Eagles travel up to Sapporo today to face the Pacific League winning but Yu Darvish-less Fighters.  Both teams have nothing really to play for, but could end up meeting in the 2nd stage of the Climax Series later this month.

Me and Gen

* Note - I got to meet up with the venerable Gen Sueyoshi of Yakyu Baka before the game.  We chatted briefly about websites, baseball (of course), and some other topics.  With both of us being Eagles fans I'm sure our paths will cross again soon!

I picked up a 55-200mm lens for my Nikon yesterday afternoon as well.  I took a ton of photos, too many to put in this post, so you can find them on this page.

Eagles vs Marines Game 23 Preview

iwakumapitch

The Lotte Marines will look to play the spoiler on a very special night at the Chiba Marines Stadium tonight.  Exiting Marines manager Bobby Valentine will coach his final home game which will no doubt be a special affair.  It's been raining all day in Chiba however; hopefully the game will not be postponed.  Rakuten leads the season series 12-10, including 8 straight victories over Lotte.

Around the Pacific League, all six teams are playing today.  1st place Nippon Ham hosts 4th place Seibu, and 3rd place Softbank hosts 6th place Orix.  With the Pacific League crown virtually assured for the Fighters, all eyes will be watching the score from the Yahoo Dome.  An Orix victory will go a long way in helping Rakuten's goal of home field advantage in the 1st stage of the Climax Series.  The lowly Buffaloes actually lead the season series with the Hawks, 12-11, but Softbank will be sending their ace pitcher Toshiya Sugiuchi (15-4, 2.47) to the mound to keep the pressure on the Eagles.

Hisashi Iwakuma

Photo © Yahoo! Japan

Pitching Matchup

No stranger to pressure, right hander Hisashi Iwakuma (13-6, 3.26) gets the nod tonight, facing Lotte's ace southpaw Yoshihisa Naruse (11-5, 3.31).  Iwakuma has faced the Marines only once this year, way back on May 9th in Chiba, striking out six in a 6-2 win.  More recently, the 28-year old will be looking to improve on his most recent outing, where he was tagged for five runs in six innings in a no-decision to the Hawks.

Naruse has yet to notch a victory over Rakuten this season, with no-decisions in both of his starts against them.  The 6-year pro has been dominant at home however, going 7-1 with four complete games and averaging almost one strikeout per inning.  Emotions will be at an all-time high in the stadium as well for Valentine's farewell, which should boost his motivation even more.

Who's Hot

1B Fernando Seguignol is riding a 10-game hitting streak, batting .432 (16 for 37) during this period.  2B Yosuke Takasu is hitting .500 over the past three games, and will probably bat leadoff for the Eagles tonight.

Who's Cold

It's tough to find many weaknesses when your team has won 18 of their last 25 games, but I'll try to keep my objectivity intact.  Although Iwakuma has gone 2-1 over his last four starts, he's surrendered 15 runs over this span.  Both of Rakuten's staff aces, Iwakuma and Tanaka, have seen their ERA's steadily increase as the season has progressed.  It's impossible to think that the Eagles' offense can continue to produce at the rate they have recently, so the team is going to need some quality starts from their pitchers as they head into their first ever playoffs.

Incumbent "Who's Cold" member, DH Takeshi Yamasaki, went hitless last night.  We'll see if his productive series versus Seibu earlier this week marked a turnaround for his slump, or was merely a momentary blip on his downward spiral.

CF Teppei Tsuchiya was injured at-bat in the top of the 9th last night when he was struck on his left leg with a wild pitch.  Reports say that he's listed day-to-day with a bruised calf, and will probably be a game time decision.  If he sits this one out, look for Ryo Hijirisawa or possibly Toshiya Nakashima to take one of the outfield positions.

First pitch at a special start time of 6:15pm local time, 2:15am PST.
