SAPPORO DOME, SAPPORO - The Rakuten Eagles surprising season came to an unfortunate close Saturday evening, as they fell to the Nippon Ham Fighters 9-4 in the fifth game of the Climax Series, 2nd Stage. The loss also closes the book on manager Katsuya Nomura, who was not offered the skipper's job for the 2010 season, but may return to the team in some honourary capacity.

With the season hanging in the balance, the Eagles will look to rookie left-hander Hiromichi Fujiwara to keep their slim hopes alive in an afternoon game in Sapporo today. Game 5 was going to be the wildcard game in the series for Rakuten anyways; after their top three pitchers the quality of their starters is questionable at best. Facing elimination though means the stakes will be even higher, so we'll truly get to see just what this 24-year-old is made of.
Eagles vs Fighters CS Game 2 Postgame: Paradise Lost

SAPPORO DOME, SAPPORO - Two outs. They can come in a blink of an eye, with a second baseman turning a 6-4-3 double play. 2 outs. They can take forever, as pitch after pitch gets batted around the ball park like a pinball. 2 アウト。 Sometimes, they never come at all.

Stage 2 of the Pacific League Climax Series gets underway this Wednesday at the Sapporo Dome, home of the Nippon Ham Fighters. Just like the crazy CFL compared to the NFL, the playoff format is slightly different in Japan. Since the Fighters are the higher seed, they will not only get home field advantage for all games, but will even begin the series with a 1 win advantage. This means that the Fighters will only have to win three games to advance to the Nippon Series, while the Eagles will have to win four. It won't be easy for either team though. There are a couple of interesting subplots that have been brewing since the end of the regular season for both teams, let's take a look at those first before diving into the head-to-head numbers.
Eagles vs Buffaloes Postgame: Home-field cookin’

KLEENEX STADIUM, SENDAI - The Eagles wrapped up a dominating season series with the Orix Buffaloes, in the process clinching home field advantage in the 1st stage of the Climax Series with a come from behind 4-3 victory in front of almost 20,000 screaming fans on a chilly Friday night.
Rookie Hiromichi Fujiwara (5-4) was a little shaky early on, giving up a 2-run blast by RF Shinji Shimoyama and a fielder's choice RBI by SS Koji Yamasaki in the top of the second inning.
Rakuten struck back quickly however with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd innings, with the bottom half of the lineup doing most of the damage once again. Fernando Seguignol started things off with a great 9-pitch at-bat, eventually drawing a walk. Todd Linden singled to left, and Jin Nakatani grounded one through the left side of the infield, loading up the bases with two outs. Leadoff hitter Yosuke Takasu cracked a 137km (85mph) fastball grounder into center field, scoring Seguignol and Linden to cut the lead to one.
The Eagles came roaring back the very next inning, again with some clutch 2-out hitting. Orix starter Yasunari Takagi (1-2) started to lose control of the strike zone, walking Daisuke Kusano on four pitches and Seguignol on five, setting the stage for Linden who belted a 2-2 fastball into the left field corner for a 2-RBI double. Linden actually ended up on 3rd base on the play but was unable to score. The damage was already done however.
Fujiwara settled down after that, scattering just 4 more hits (all singles) over the next 6 innings. He was also helped out by some great deep outfield catches by Linden and RF Toshiya Nakashima. Kazuo Fukumori came on to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his team-leading tenth save of the year.
While the victory will relieve a little pressure on the Eagles, their final two games still have postseason ramifications, as they face 1st place Nippon Ham in Sapporo tonight, and finish off the regular season at home against their 1st stage opponent, the Softbank Hawks. They'll definitely want to finish strong to keep their momentum as they enter their first ever postseason!
Pitching
24-year old rookie Fujiwara continues to see his stock rise and is undefeated in his last seven starts (3-0). The lefty showed a lot of poise after surrendering a three run lead early on, basically shutting down the Buffaloes offense after the second inning. Has Rakuten finally found their left-handed starter? All signs are pointing to yes at this point.
Hitting
Takasu and Linden provided all the offense Rakuten needed on this night. Takasu (3 for 3, 2 RBI, 1 BB) has now brought his batting average up over the .300 mark, and Linden (2 for 3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R) is rapidly approaching the .300 level himself. Seguignol also played an important role in the scoring, going 1 for 2 with two walks and two runs scored.
Next Game
The Eagles travel up to Sapporo today to face the Pacific League winning but Yu Darvish-less Fighters. Both teams have nothing really to play for, but could end up meeting in the 2nd stage of the Climax Series later this month.
* Note - I got to meet up with the venerable Gen Sueyoshi of Yakyu Baka before the game. We chatted briefly about websites, baseball (of course), and some other topics. With both of us being Eagles fans I'm sure our paths will cross again soon!
I picked up a 55-200mm lens for my Nikon yesterday afternoon as well. I took a ton of photos, too many to put in this post, so you can find them on this page.

Eagles vs Buffaloes Game 24 Preview

Running really late today everybody, so it's just a quick preview before I gotta head down to the stadium to watch the game! I'll do a little tweeting from the game if I have time... so busy today!!!
Rakuten can wrap up home field advantage in the 1st stage of the climax series tonight with a victory over the Orix Buffaloes. The Eagles have dominated the season series, taking 18 of the 23 games they've played against each other.

Pitching Matchup
Rookie left-hander Hiromichi Fujiwara (4-4, 4.11) looks to continue his solid play of late. Three of his wins have came against Orix, including his last win back on September 23rd, and 8 inning effort where he gave up only one run.
He'll be facing 10-year veteran lefty Yasunari Takagi (1-1, 4.20). His last two starts have been against the Eagles, splitting the games with a 2.45 ERA.
First pitch is at 6pm local time, 2am PST.

Pregame
I had some free time this afternoon, so I walked down to the stadium and snapped a couple of photos. Why am I not going tonight? I'll probably go tomorrow night if Ma-kun is pitching, and I already have tickets for the 3rd and the 9th...
Top of the 1st
Fujiwara looks good early, challenging the Softbank batters and establishing strikes down low. Ortiz hits a high chopper that goes over Kusano's outstretched glove; as Ortiz reaches first base he points with both hands to the sky. The gods weren't in his favour last night, so I guess he's trying to get some brownie points in early.
Bottom of the 1st
The Softbank Hawks have the most god awful hats in all of Japanese baseball.
Naoto just barely gets called out sliding head-first into first base. That guy is all hustle and loves getting his uniform dirty. Eagles go down in order.
Top of the 2nd
As was the case last night, not much of a crowd here tonight. When I went by the stadium around 4 this afternoon, the board showed available seats in almost every section. Nomu-san has his own thoughts on why the fans aren't showing up, but midweek games and a 6pm start time never sell well here in Sendai. There are lots of walkups during the game as people get off work, but unless Tanaka or Iwakuma are pitching it's not gonna sell out during the week.
Fujiwara gives up a leadoff hit, but one double play and another grounder quickly end the inning for the Hawks.
Bottom of the 2nd
Yamasaki swings at the first pitch he sees, flying out into foul territory. The slump continues.
Kusano gets onboard with an infield single, then steals second. Linden cranks a double that lands at the bottom of the center field wall, and Kusano cruises in for the first run of the game. Eagles 1 - Hawks 0
Linden scans the outfield as he waits at second base, looking like someone just scratched his pickup truck or something.
Top of the 3rd
While I ran down to 7-11 to pick up some ghetto-curry, the Hawks tied up the game on a solo homer by the catcher. Eagles 1 - Hawks 1
Bottom of the 3rd
Houlton was cruising along when suddenly Teppei cranked a shot to deep left center... HOMERUN! Or is it??? The way the ball bounced back onto the field temporarily had people thinking that it hit the fence, but replays showed that it simply bounced off of one of the seats. Rakuten scores! Eagles 2 - Hawks 1
Yamasaki pops out behind the plate this time. At least he's finding different ways to not hit.
Top of the 4th
After Teppei made a sliding catch to rob the Hawks of a hit, Fujiwara strikes out Matsunaka to finish things off.
Bottom of the 4th
Both the 1st place Fighters and the 4th place Lions are currently losing... good news so far...
Linden strikes out looking, and has a few choice words for the umpire as he makes his way to the dugout.
Seguignol hits a fly ball to Ortiz in left field, and, to paraphrase the immortal Harry Carey, he "picks it out of the air, like he was picking bananas back home in the Dominican Republic."
Top of the 5th
The ride on the Fujiwara Express gets a little rocky in the 5th. After walking the leadoff batter and giving up a single that squirts through the infield, Fujiwara loads up the bases when he hits the next batter. Matsuda is up now, with only one out. He lines a single into left, and the game is tied again, bases still loaded. Eagles 2 - Hawks 2
After almost hitting batter Honda to walk in a run, Fujiwara serves up a juicy fastball which Honda bounces into the seats for a ground rule double. That's gonna end the night for the young left-hander. Eagles 2 - Hawks 4
The final line on Fujiwara: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4 R. Kawagishi comes into the game with the unenviable task of trying to stop the bleeding. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, still one out.
Ortiz hits a fly ball to shallow right center, and the runner at 3rd tags up. There's gonna be a play at the plate! As Softbank's Honda races home, Teppei fires the ball home. Just as catcher Nakatani closes his glove on the ball, Honda crashes into him... OUT! Nice double play to save the Eagles from more pain.
Bottom of the 5th
Houlton starts to lose control, issuing 3 walks in the inning. The table is set for Yamasaki with 2 out and the bases loaded... he hits the ball deep to left, but it doesn't have quite enough legs to get out of the park, and Ortiz snags it about 10 feet from the wall. The Eagles are getting their chances but haven't been able to capitalize on them... yet?
Bottom of the 6th
Seguignol smacks a two out double, and Takasu pinch hits to replace Kosaka. He hits a slow chopper to 2nd base and beats the throw. Runners on the corners, and now Kenshi is gonna pinch hit for Nakatani.
Kenshi strikes out... badly. I know he hasn't been playing recently, but you gotta make contact with the ball. Especially when you wear your first name on the back of your uniform. And have a bright orange bat.
Top of the 7th
Shima replaces Nakatani at catcher, and Takasu takes Kosaka's spot at second base. Kusano makes a nice diving play and fires a laser to first. Daisuke Kusano has been one of the best surprises this season for Rakuten. He plays with such swagger and seems like a good guy to have in the clubhouse.
Bottom of the 7th
Rakuten is threatening again with runners at 1st and 2nd and one out. Yamasaki is up to bat, and... he yawns. That's not gonna inspire a lot of confidence in the fans!
Yamasaki gets good wood on it again, but the result is the same. This time he flies out at the right field warning track. We're going on 10 games now, Nomura has GOT to consider dropping him in the lineup.
Kusano cracks one into the outfield, and Nakamura scores from second base! Teppei reaches 3rd. Eagles 3 - Hawks 4
Linden slices one deep to left field, scoring Teppei! Ortiz kicks the ball around in the corner, allowing Kusano to score from first base! Double for Linden, and the Eagles retake the lead! Eagles 5 - Hawks 4
That's it for Houlton, he's replaced by Yoshiaki Fujioka. Two out, Linden on second, and big Fernando Seguignol is now at the plate. He goes down swinging, and suddenly Rakuten are 6 outs away from second place!
Top of the 8th
Final line on D. J. Houlton: 6.2 IP, 9 H, 5 K, 4 BB, 5 R.
Kazuo Fukumori replaces a solid relief effort by Kawagishi. Just in case you're wondering, here's what the Eagles pitchers get up to in their free time. Why is Kazuo in shorts and a t-shirt, and Hisashi in jeans and a long sleeve?
The Hawks go down in order; Takasu will lead things off in the bottom of the inning.
Bottom of the 8th
Eagles go down in order. Looks like Nomura's gonna go with Fukumori to close the show.
Top of the 9th
All three Pacific League games tonight are 1-run affairs. Orix leads Nippon Ham 6-5 in the 7th, and Lotte is hanging onto a 1-0 lead against Seibu in the 9th.
G. G. Sato just put the Lions ahead of the Marines 2-1 in the 9th inning!
Fukumori strikes out the first batter of the ninth, Hiroki Kokubo. Softbank's DH, Nobuhiko Matsunaka, reaches way down and slaps a single through the infield. He's replaced with a pinch runner. Tamura is up next; he's got 17 HR on the year. Fukumori is doing his best to keep the runner at 1st, throwing over to Seguignol five times now. Eventually he'll either get him out or throw the ball away. The runner Kidokuro breaks for 2nd... safe! Fukumori then throws a wild pitch in the dirt and Kidokuro gets to third.
Tamura strikes out! Softbank is down to their last out. Up steps left-hander Hasegawa. Pitching coach Satoh strolls up to the mound to discuss strategy with the Rakuten pitcher and catcher. Hasegawa is 1 for 3 on the night.
First pitch is high for a ball. The second pitch juuust catches the inside of the plate for a called strike. After missing away with a breaking ball, Hasegawa hits a grounder to Seguignol, and the game is over! Eagles win!
Final Score: Eagles 5 - Hawks 4

- 0.5 - Softbank's slim lead over Rakuten for second place in the Pacific League.
- 4 - The number of Softbank errors so far in this series.
- 4 - The number of Hawks games remaining.

Pitching Matchup
The Eagles will send Hiromichi Fujiwara (4-4, 3.86) to the mound tonight to face D.J. Houlton (11-7, 2.74). Fujiwara is 2-1 in his last three starts, but both victories came at the expense of the cellar dwelling Orix Buffaloes. Versus Softbank this season Fujiwara is 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA. While the Rakuten faithful are hoping that the 24-year old rookie can continue his strong pitching of late, it will be interesting to see how he deals with this kind of pressure.
D.J. Houlton has pitched very well against Rakuten this year (2-1, 1.29). He'll do doubt be hoping to avenge his September 12th loss against the Eagles last month. The ex-Dodger is second on the club in wins, innings pitched (164.1), and strikeouts (133).
Who's Hot
Leadoff batter Masato Nakamura is hitting .600 (1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) in this series. He also showed his resolve last night, coming through with a clutch hit after making a baserunning mistake earlier in the game. The right fielder is batting .300 on the season with runners in scoring position.
Who's Cold
The 3-4 spot in the lineup are not hitting well. NPB-leading hitter Teppei Tsuchiya (.327 BA) has hit a bit of a rough patch recently, collecting only 4 hits in his last 23 at-bats. DH Takeshi Yamasaki continues what is now a full blown slump, batting .094 (3 for 32) over the past nine games. Yamasaki-sama, okite kudasai!
Live Blog! Eagles vs Buffaloes

Pregame - Well it looks like they're going to make a go of it. It's been wet and rainy all morning here in Sendai, but with the regular season winding down and the previous rainout games already rescheduled it would appear that we're in store for a sloppy and wet affair this afternoon. Sloppy and wet are good for certain activities, like sex and mud wrestling, but for baseball...
For the Eagles, rookie Hiromichi Fujiwara faces Kazuki Kondoh. Fujiwara has 1 win in his last 3 starts with 2 no-decisions, with the win coming against Orix back on September 10th. The left-hander is 3-4 on the season with a 4.20 ERA. Kondoh (8-10, 5.28 ERA) is 1-2 in his last 3 starts, losing his last games versus the Eagles. It looks like Nomura is continuing to use a 6-man rotation, hoping someone can join Iwakuma and Nagai as possible playoff starters so Ma-kun can help out the bullpen.
Linden is back starting in left field, replacing Nakashima. Masato Nakamura will start in right field instead of Miyade. Rakuten leads the season series with 16 victories against 4 defeats.
Top 1st - Sakaguchi singles to get things started for Orix. The centerfielder continues to wreak havoc on Rakuten's pitching staff. He advances to second on a sac bunt and to third on a flyout, but Rhodes hits a towering fly ball to center to end the threat.
Bottom 1st - Masato Nakamura doubles to lead things off for Rakuten. Watanabe and Teppei both ground out. The Eagles batters weren't able to find any holes in Orix's infield yesterday either. The rain-soaked field won't make it any easier to squeeze ground balls through the defense. Yamasaki walks to put runners at 1st and 2nd, but Seguignol strikes out on a nice slider by Kondoh to end the inning.
Top 2nd - Of course as soon as I mention the infield, Gotoh bounces one just past Watanabe for a single. Things are quickly over though on a strike 'em out / throw 'em out play at 2nd base. Catcher Jin Nakatani fires a laser to Takasu, catching Gotoh by a mile. 2 strikeouts this inning by Fujiwara.
Bottom 2nd - Kusano grounds out to 1st, Takasu grounds out to short. The Hawks and Marines are tied at 1 in the first inning. Lions and Fighters start their game in about half an hour. Linden cranks a double to center that just misses being a home run by a foot. Nakatani is up next. He's got an unorthodox batting stance; basically it looks like he's always going to bunt. Can't say it's really working for him either; he's hitting .156 on the season, and flies out to 1st base to end the inning.
Top 3rd - Takasu is shaken up momentarily after getting taken out trying to convert a double play. Looks like he's okay though. Fujiwara is looking strong so far, consistently getting ahead in the count.
Middle 3rd - Mr. Carasco is back!!! He's been mysteriously absent for a couple months now. Rumour has it that he was arrested trying to import some counterfeit Louis Vuitton handbags from Thailand...
Bottom 3rd - The Eagles batters have been working the counts pretty deep so far, and now they're starting to fly out to the outfield instead of grounding out. It's an improvement I suppose... Teppei continues to lead the Pacific League in hitting, 11 points higher at .333 than Nippon Ham's Itoi. He adds to his lead, singling to right and advancing to 3rd on a Yamasaki hit.
Looks like the infield holes are starting to open up! Seguignol singles up the middle, scoring Teppei. Eagles 1 - Orix 0
Top 4th - Marines lead the Hawks 2-1 on a "timely hit" by Ohmatsu. Is there such a thing as an "untimely hit"? Rhodes complains about a check swing strike. I dunno how that guy can complain about seeing anything with his helmet pulled down so low like that! I wonder if he saw himself fly out to center again. Shimoyama belts a ground-rule double, Orix on 2nd and 3rd.
Great play at the plate! A fly ball is hit to center and the runner at 3rd tags up. Teppei catches the ball and relays the ball to Watanabe as Kitagawa sprints home. Nakatani does a superb job blocking the plate, not budging an inch as Kitagawa slides into his leg.
Bottom 4th - Bases loaded for Nakamura, as Takasu, Linden, and Nakatani all reach base, the latter with a bunt single. Kosaka pinch runs for Takasu, who'll probably get some treatment on his injury from earlier in the game. TIMELY HIT!!! A double to the center field wall scores Kosaka and Linden. Eagles 3 - Orix 0
Teppei walks, loading the bases again for Yamasaki, but he hits into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Kondoh is starting to lose control of his pitches, with his pitch count already over 80 in just 4 innings. The Lions put up 3 runs in the first against the Fighters. Fighters management are searching the internet for information on how to clone Darvish.
Top 5th - Yokoyama hits a 2 out, 2 strike ground ball double to keep Orix alive here in the 5th inning. Sakaguchi hits a full count single to right, scoring Yokoyama. Eagles 3 - Orix 1
Sakaguchi reaches 2nd on a ball in the dirt. Nerves starting to set in?
The Marines have exploded for 5 runs so far in the top of the 4th inning, and now lead Softbank 7-2!
Bottom 5th - Seguignol fouls a pitch off his leg, then rubs dirt on the wound. I've seen him to this numerous times this season to any part of his body that gets hurt. Is this some kind of crazy Panamanian voodoo?!?!
DOUBLE! Seggy rumbles into second with a stand-up double to left center. Experience the POWER OF DIRT!!!
Seggy almost gets picked off at 2nd base, and probably would have if Tamasaki held on to the ball. Seguignol got his first (and probably only) steal of the year 2 nights ago. He gets a good laugh about the pickoff attempt after he picks himself up off the dirt. He's wearing a lot of it now, and should probably change his uniform between innings or else he might detonate from all that dirt power.
Kosaka draws a walk, but Linden grounds into a double play.
Top 6th - Attendance looks pretty good despite the weather. Seibu has extended its lead over Nippon Ham, 5-0 in the 3rd. Softbank has clawed back for 2 runs, now trailing Lotte 7-4 in the 4th.
Kitagawa leads off the inning with a single, followed by Rhodes, who strikes out. Again. He's been slumping lately with only 2 hits in his last 22 ABs. Not bad for someone who prefers to bat blind.
Bottom 6th - Kondoh's up over 100 pitches now. I wonder who decides how to Romanize the player's names. I've seen Kondo, Kondou, and Kondoh before. I kinda like the look of the superfluous "H".
Nakatani continues the game of his life and singles to right, followed up by an infield high chopper single by Nakamura.
Watanabe leans in, attempting to bunt the runners ahead a base. I wonder what would happen if he just through himself in front of the pitch, would it be a HBP? From what the movie "Mr. Baseball" said about NPB, as long as you don't step on the plate, anything goes! Watanabe bunts -- right back to Kondoh, who throws out Nakatani at 3rd. Before the All-Star break the Eagles were bunting with ease, frequently scoring on squeeze plays at home. Recently though they've been quite ineffective in getting bunts down properly. Naoto has got to get that ball down the first base line in these situations.
Teppei shows Naoto how it's done, laying a picture perfect bunt down the first base line... safe! Yamasaki is up next.
Wild pitch! Kondoh chucks one in the dirt, allowing Masato to score from 3rd. Naoto and Teppei also advance on the passed ball. Eagles 4 - Orix 1
Yamasaki flies out to center, but it's not deep enough for Watanabe to score. Seguignol walks, loading up the bases for the 3rd time this afternoon. Kusano comes within a few feet of hitting the money shot, but the right fielder snags the deep ball with his back against the wall.
Top 7th - Fujiwara finishes off the 7th at 98 pitches as the Buffaloes go down 1-2-3. From what I've read about Nomura's managerial style over at Yakyu Baka (here, here, & here), he'll probably ride young Fujiwara today until his arm falls off. Can't say I blame him, the Eagles' relief pitchers range from average to abysmal for the most part.
Bottom 7th - The camera catches Watanabe and Yamasaki having a chat in the dugout. Takeshi Yamasaki reminds me of Bolo Yeung, probably best known as Chong Li in "Bloodsport". I wouldn't want to go toe-to-toe with either of them.
Kondoh suddenly remembers how to pitch, striking out Linden and Nakatani to end the inning. Linden strikes out about once every 3 ABs. It's like he thinks he's Dean Palmer, but without the homerun power. Part of it is from getting used to the NPB strike zone, but even back in the USA he was a free swinger. He's particularly vulnerable to sliders and breaking balls inside. This time he struck out on an outside pitch... so that's a good sign?
Top 8th - Announced attendance of over 19,000 at Kleenex Stadium here in Sendai, which is a great crowd on a gloomy day to finish off Silver Week. I don't want to go to work tomorrow.
With two runners on base, Rhodes chops one to second to end the inning. I still don't know how he makes contact with the ball, it's like Luke Skywalker and that laser ball thingy in Star Wars. They show Rhodes chillin' on the bench afterwards, where he promptly crams his pinky into his nose, then sticks his middle finger in his mouth. Ohhh so close.
Bottom 8th - Ryuji Miyade pinch hits for Masato Nakamura, signalling the end of the night for the right fielder. Although Masato and Fujiwara will proabably get Hero of the Game awards if Rakuten hangs on, I think an award should go to catcher Jin Nakatani as well. He played an excellent game today both offensively and defensively, and even split a bat in half with a judo chop. Maybe it was a fastball.
Top 9th - The closer of the minute is Shinichiro Koyama. Kazuo Fukumori had emerged as the Eagles' closer over the 2nd half of the season, but has become erratic in recent outings. Enter the bespectacled Koyama, who's having a strong 2nd half of the season himself.
Game over! Koyama strikes out the side (!!!) further positioning himself as the possible closer by getting the save, but more importantly sealing the win for Rakuten.
Final Score: Eagles 4 - Orix 1
Postgame - Sure enough, Nakamura and Fujiwara are the Heroes of the Game, thereby receiving the coveted Kit-Kat pillow. Fujiwara scattered 9 hits over 8 innings with 4 strikeouts and no walks, and never appeared to be in much trouble throughout the game. Nakamura went 3 for 4 (2 doubles), knocking in 2 runs and scoring another.
If the Eagles can get their middle relief in order then they have to be considered as a threat to not only make the Climax Series, but the Nippon Series as well. They've got a pretty deep bench, and Nomura has been able to tweak the lineup to the point where there isn't a major weakness from 1 to 8. The catchers at the 9 spot is a concern, but with two capable defensive catchers on the roster Nomura has been able to pinch hit at the 9 spot when necessary.
Rakuten's win, combined with Softbank's loss puts the Eagles just 1 game behind the Hawks for 2nd place in the Pacific League. The first round of the Climax Series is a best of 3 game affair, with all 3 games being played at the 2nd place team's stadium! Personally I think this is an absolutely retarded system; there's no reason that it shouldn't alternate.
Of course if Rakuten happens to be in 2nd by the end of the season, then it's the best system ever and never ever should be changed.
Up next is a critical stretch which in all likelihood determine whether Rakuten will be celebrating its first playoff birth in their 5 year history or not. First up is a 3 game series in Saitama against the Seibu Lions, followed by a 4 game series at home vs Softbank and another 2 games at home against Seibu.
GO EAGLES!!!

16th Win 11-4
21st Loss 9-8
